Freezing Jurkat cells protected with FOS and GOS developed at PREMIUM

Screening cryoprotective effect of new FOS and GOS on Jurkat cells

Screening cryoprotective effect of some new FOS and GOS produced by synthesis and hydrolysis on Jurkat cells

During the secondment of Paula Castilho from University of Madeira (Uma, Portugal) at Asymptote (UK), Paula, Julie Meneghel and Peter Kilbride (both from Asymptote) are testing three samples of fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) produced by synthesis as well as two GOS samples produced by hydrolysis, for their ability to protect Jurkat cells during freezing.

FOS and GOS from synthesis were produced at CIDCA –CONICET and GOS from hydrolysis were produced at the University of Madeira (UMa). They were initially developed to protect micro-organisms, mainly lactic acid bacteria. However, FOS and GOS can potentially also protect mammalian cells such as Jurkat cells studied by Asymptote-GE Healthcare.
